Finding Affordable Housing
Finding affordable housing is possible when you’re informed about what options exist and what programs can help. There are several low income housing solutions that you may want to consider if this is what you are in need of.
Housing Choice Voucher Program
One type of affordable housing is the Housing Choice Voucher Program or Section 8. It provides help to very low-income families with sanitary, safe, and decent housing. These vouchers are given out locally by Public Housing Agencies. You must be eligible to take advantage of this option and have a very low income which is based on annual gross income.
Public Housing
Another affordable housing option is public housing. It’s provided for low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers the program. Your eligibility will be determined by your local public housing agency based on your annual gross income and if you qualify as a senior or someone with a disability.
Supportive Housing for Elderly
This program is for older adults and seniors. All applicants must be at least 62 years old and need to have at least 50% of the median income in that local area. Under this program, there are transportation and independent living benefits as well as other facilities included.
Low-Income Housing Tax Credit
When looking for affordable housing, you may want to take advantage of the low-income housing tax credit. In this case, you’ll be paying a reduced rent and you won’t have to worry about a long waiting list. You will get housing at a much lower rate since it’s a federal government-funded program.
